Lextar Electronics, Taiwan-based LED company of BenQ and AU Optronics Group held a ground-breaking ceremony for its new LED project in Suzhou China, which is the first flagship LED enterprise in Suzhou Science Industrial Park (SIP) integrating the upper stream, middle stream, and downstream manufacturing. With a total investment of 500 million US dollars, it will become Lextar’s biggest LED production base in mainland China.

Covering a land area of over 240,000 square meters and with projected 5,000 employees, the facility will be ready for production in 2011 and the key products will be LED backlight for LCD panel and LED lighting devices. The plant is the first production base of Lextar Electronics outside Taiwan, the only LED enterprise in mainland China covering upper stream epi wafer, middle stream chips, downstream packaging and application products, as well as one of the few companies adopting integrated business model in the field.

Mr. H.B. Chen, Chairman of Lextar Electronics Corp., said that BenQ and AU Optronics Group has created an industrial chain in Suzhou in the past decade, and the founding of Lextar plant will complete the chain.

The plant is going to open for production in 2011. Lextar Taiwan plans to increase the number of MOCVD (metal organic chemical vapor deposition) equipment to 70 units by the end of the year, among which two thirds are 4-inch machines, and Lextar Suzhou site plans to put into operation 50 MOCVD units next year.
